One of the things that my mum made sure I had when I was young was swimming lessons. This was not something she could take me to, as she had to work full time, but she made sure she found child care for me that would make sure I was there each day. I took these lessons for a few years, though I never took the advanced lessons that you need to become a lifeguard. That was not a goal of mine, so that was really not a problem. However, I did do well and was always a strong swimmer. There were days you could not get me to come out of the water.
I can?t think of any reasons why swimming lessons would not be a good idea. Children can be afraid of the water, but this is one of the best ways to get them to relax and enjoy it. For those that are afraid, there are some places that have lessons on swimming that can help a child deal with a strong fear of the water. Once they can get over the small steps needed to get them into the water, lessons will enhance the feeling that they are in control and that there is nothing to be scared of when entering the water.
You may find that some communities offer free or low cost swimming lessons, and others only have the programs offered by the local YMCA or gym. These can be a bit more costly, but they are really worth the price. No matter how you feel about the water, swimming lessons can help save lives. You never know where you will go or what you will do, and when water is involved, it is a calming feeling when you know your child knows how to swim should they fall in somewhere, or if they are presented with an opportunity to swim when you are not there. No one should put your child in the water without your permission, but it has been known to happen.
If you don?t know how to swim, swimming lessons may be something that you want to do with your child. That way you are learning together, and will have the memory to share. All people should have, at the very least, some swimming skills. Not only can this save lives, it can add a new dimension to the summer and get together activities with friends and family. Don?t pass up the swimming lessons, they are actually more important than you may think.
